Highlights of the press conference

OK, I'm getting really meshuggah.  My hands are shaking. 

I have been online since 4.45 this morning (I took a vacation day today by the way).  But it hasn't been much of a vacation.

I have been doggedly (pun completely intended) following this whole debacle since the word go.  St Patrick's Day, I was in Future Bakery having a pint when I read the story about the recall in the Globe & Mail.   I read that this company I never even heard of was recalling a brand of cat food that I used on a regular basis.   I went straight home, pulled what I had out of the cupboard and then I got online and I started searching.

And then I found out it was two brands of cat food that I used.  Iams and Nutro.  And that it was specifically the pouch food, which Marmalade adored.

And I have been online day and night ever since, searching and searching and searching.

This is no hardship for me by the way - I do research and connect people to information for a living because it is one of my favourite things to do. I take comfort in the research I'm doing for myself on this topic, because I'm taking back control. I am not passively sitting back and letting this happen to me. 

But.  What the hell is going on?

Kenya, Obama and Hope

I was in Nairobi, Mombasa and Lamu just four short months ago and I fell in love.  I fell in love with Kenya for her people; for the hospitality, wisdom, kindness, brilliance and courage I found.  But I suppose I never got to know Kenya well enough to have imagined I was in a tinderbox, that this would happen.  
Now Kenya is burning, and I still haven't been able to get in touch with any of my friends except for my friends who are bloggers, and from them I get images of troops marching through Nairobi's empty streets (streets I remember quite differently), sad stories, stories of human life wasted.   I've started praying and I'm not the praying kind.
Which brings me to Barack Obama.  He isn't exactly an African topic, but his win at the Iowa Caucus and his speech tonight have given me reason to believe in my own country again.  
To be sure, the kind of unity he's calling for--one that transcends red states and blue states--is a lot easier to come by than the love Kenya will need to heal itself from this.  But Barack Obama is a son of a Kenyan, and after tonight it looks like he might just become America's first Black president, all because he promises the only thing that can bring a lost and divided people back from the brink: hope.
They said this day would never come.  They said our sights were set too high.  They said this country was too divided, too disillusioned to ever come together around a common purpose.  But on this January 9th, at this defining moment of history, you have done what the cynics said we couldn't do.


If you really believe the President of the United States is the leader of the free world, then this son of a Kenyan just may change the world.

My six-kilo Africa blog

I miss this blog more than you can imagine, but regular internet access can be hard to come by when you're an international jet-setter without the international jet-setter's company Blackberry with international data roaming.
So in lieu of blogging, I've been doing it the old-fashioned way:


That's six kilos of people, places and thought.  I never realized how much cheaper and portable (and lighter!) thought has become since the internet happened.  Needless to say, I'll be spending the next year working on making some of this digital before I plot my next escape.

Only in America

Some enterprising folks have taken the scourge of the American highways, and turned it into the bane of America's waterways.

The Terra Wind is an amphibious motor home. It can do 80 mph on the highway and about six knots on water.

It was created by Jim and Julie Giljam, of South Carolina, who showed off the vehicle at a recent RV show in the Washington area.

The amphibious RV is more like a luxury liner, with everything from a full-size Jacuzzi whirlpool bath to a big screen TV.

While the motor home is at home on the water, the Giljams say it's not for ocean cruises. It can only take waves up to about four feet high.

One of my dreams is RV-ownership, but I harbor (no pun intended) no illusions about the type of person who generally drives these giant testaments to discretionary income. I look forward to the first news story about a retiree who, unwilling to accept his wife's increasingly frantic suggestions, takes one of these things across a swollen river, or better yet, into the ocean itself ("don't worry honey, she can take it"). Imagine the look on the locals' faces when the driver, distracted by the barking of his toy poodle, puts his RV broadside to an unexpected swell.

Opening Day, 2011

Tigers 7, Blue Jays 0: This was a shocker. I watched the carnage unfold on my computer screen. Oddly enough, none of the Tigers' runs were all that surprising. They did, after all, come from Pena, Rodriguez, and White, who are all pretty good hitters. And even the best pitchers have bad days. No, the real shocker was that Jason Johnson shut down the Blue Jays like he did.

Royals 9, White Sox 7: You'll forgive me for having a bit of a regional bias here. In games that don't directly effect the Mariners, I'll root for the Royals. Plus, there's no way you could watch this game, or, really, the last year of baseball, and not love these guys. What they lack in talent they make up for in heart. Forgive the cliche, but there's not much else to explain what these guys do. They have a lot of confidence. And so, when I wrote this game off as "over" to one of my friends today in the eighth inning, I didn't realize how wrong I was.

Billy Koch came in. If you learn anything from watching Billy Koch, you know that when he enters a game, no lead is safe. So it went, as he entered a 7-3 game, and suddenly I became interested. Suddenly, it's 7-4, and Matt Stairs (the official pinch hitter of Mariner bloggers everywhere) pinch hits for Tony Graffanino. Not a bad move in itself, except that Stairs, a lefty, almost forces Ozzie Guillen to bring in his best reliever, Damaso Marte, to squash the rally.

So who does Tony Pena bring in to save the day? Mendy Lopez. And what does Mendy Lopez do? Hits a three run shot to tie the game! What planet is this? In a million years, did you ever see that one coming? The next one, everyone in the Kansas City metropolitan area saw coming a mile away. Carlos Beltran was going to jack this one.

Twins 7, Indians 4: Another great one. Twins were down 4-0, but rookie Joe Mauer started a couple rallies with a walk in the eighth and a base hit in the eleventh, and Shannon Stewart hit a three-run homer in the eleventh to win it for the Twins.
